ARUSHA, Tanzania, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's Zanzibar archipelago on Monday launched an investigation on a cargo ship named "New Happy" that was about to sink on Saturday night plying the route between Dar es Salaam and the Indian Ocean Island.
The ship owned by a famous businessman in Zanzibar identified as Khamis Kipara was carrying timber and other commodities to Zanzibar.
Abdallah Kombo, director of Zanzibar Port Cooperation (ZPC) said that investigation on the matter was still ongoing and the report would be made available to the public soon to establish the cause.
The maritime official said a team of engineers had been dispatched to examine the ship and report back on the age of the ship.
"We have also called the owner and those responsible while the ship was about to sink for questioning," he said, promising to inform the public on the cause of the accident after collecting enough details.
On Sunday, Unguja West Urban Regional Police Commander, Mkadam Khamis Mkadam told reporters that the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. local time on Saturday.
Authorities said the cause of the incident was yet to be established, but maintained that there were no deaths or injuries reported.
He said the police in collaboration with experts were conducting investigations to establish the source of the incident. Enditem
