LAGOS, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian troops operating in the northeast Borno State on Sunday said it has liberated over 5,000 persons held hostages by Boko Haram terrorists during raids.
Spokesperson for the Nigerian Army Col. Sanni Usman said in a statement reaching Xinhua in Lagos that troops of the 21 Brigade and civilian troops conducted raids in over ten villages in which they killed six Boko Haram terrorists and wounded several others.
The troops also recovered five motorcycles and a similar number of bicycles, he added.
Boko Haram has killed more than 10,000 people, mostly in northeastern Nigeria, since it launched its campaign of violence in 2009.
The Nigerian army and other local security agencies have made tremendous progress in the fight against the terror group in the past year, retaking most of the areas previously under insurgents' control.
However, the jihadist group still regularly stages suicide bombings, mainly in crowded areas such as markets and mosques. Enditem
