NEW DELHI, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India's joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will help protect the region from threats of terrorism while helping drive the region's economic growth.

Modi made the statement when addressing the SCO summit held in the Uzbekistan capital Tashkent, said local media.

"India's membership of SCO would contribute to region's prosperity. It would also strengthen its security. Our partnership will protect our societies from the threats of radical ideologies of hate, violence and terror," the Press Trust of India quoted him as saying.

"India will unite with SCO countries to work towards this goal. And, we will adopt zero tolerance and a comprehensive approach in fighting terrorism at all levels," said Modi.

India and Pakistan Friday signed the SCO's Memorandum of Obligations, kick-starting the process of its accession into the group as a full member.

India is expecting to get greater access to major gas and oil exploration projects in Central Asia after becoming the bloc's former member country. Enditem
