Vietnam's CPI to see 1.72 pct rise in first half of 2016: statistics

HANOI, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, is expected to rise 1.72 percent in the first half (H1) of 2016, said the General Statistics Office (GSO) on Friday.

According to a report released by the GSO, in June, Vietnam is likely to see its CPI increase 0.46 percent compared to May and 2.4 percent year-on-year.

These figures have driven the June CPI to hike 2.35 percent compared to December 2015, said the GSO.

In June, ten out of eleven items in the CPI calculation basket are estimated to have their prices climb against the previous month. Transport group is likely to witness the highest rise of 2.99 percent while group of other goods and services is to experience the lowest increase of 0.03 percent over May, among others.

Meanwhile, only price of post and communication group is projected to go down 0.06 percent in June compared to the previous month, said the office.

Though not included in the CPI calculation basket, price of U.S. dollar is likely to go up 0.09 percent in June while that of gold will drop 0.01 percent over May.

Earlier, Vietnam sets to keep inflation at less than 5 percent in 2016.

Monthly CPI in Vietnam is calculated from the 15th day of the previous month to the 15th day of the reference month.
