JAKARTA, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's House of Representatives' legal commission on Thursday night approved the sole candidate to lead the country's police forces.

Commissioner General Tito Karnavian, who currently heads Indonesia's National Counterterrorism Agency, passed a fit-and-proper test carried out by the lawmakers from the House's legal commission who grilled the candidate for several hours.

A plenary session at the House next Monday is scheduled to seal Tito's appointment before President Joko Widodo swears him in.

"I hope for the support from the public," Tito told reporters after finishing the session.

The three-star general is famously known for his achievements in combating terrorism across the archipelago.

Tito, who previously was chief of the Jakarta Police, will succeed General Badrodin Haiti who will retire in July.
