Public service crucial to global sustainable development, UN chief says

UNITED NATIONS, June 23 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday said that the efforts of women and men engaged in public service are crucial to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a blueprint for the global development efforts for the next 15 years.

In his message to mark the United Nations Public Service Day, which is observed annually on June 23, Ban paid tribute to public servants in all countries for their dedication to excellence on the day set aside by the UN General Assembly to spotlight their invaluable contributions.

"Each Sustainable Development Goal is linked to the delivery of public service: from health to education, from safety to the rule of law [and] from water and energy to economic policies and beyond," he said.

Meanwhile, the secretary-general also noted the need for a diverse, ethical competent, equipped and well-resourced public service in every country, saying that it needs to be dedicated to effectively serving people and improving the lives of the poorest and most vulnerable.

Recognizing the important role of the staff of the United Nations, the secretary-general said, "Across 10 years leading this noble organization, I marvel at their dedication and professionalism every single day."

"Together, let us to create an environment where public service can flourish with creativity, innovation and a shared drive to realize the 2030 Agenda," Ban added.

The UN Public Service Day intends to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community; highlight the contribution of public service in the development process; recognize the work of public servants, and encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector. Enditem
