PHNOM PENH, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Lightning strikes and storms had killed at least 69 people in Cambodia in the first six months of 2016, according to the latest report of the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM) on Thursday.

Thunderbolts claimed 60 lives and injured 62 others during the January-June period this year, as strong winds killed 9 and injured 139 others, the report said.

Besides the human casualties, storms had completely destroyed nearly 1,300 houses across the kingdom, it added.

"This year, the weather was bad," NCDM's first vice president Nhim Vanda said during a disaster control meeting earlier this week. "After the country suffered the worst drought in decades, rain has come (since May) and brought with lightning and storms that have cost people's lives and damaged properties."
