China consumes over 40,000 tons of Vietnamese litchi so far in 2016

HANOI, June 23 (Xinhua) -- China has consumed over 40,000 tons of Vietnamese litchi so far this year, according to the department of trade and industry of Vietnam's northern Bac Giang province on Thursday.

Litchi, famous for its succulent taste, is mainly produced in northern Vietnam, including Bac Giang province, Hai Duong province and Hung Yen province.

A report on litchi production and consumption posted on the department's website on Thursday showed that as of Wednesday, Chinese consumption of the fruit accounted for nearly 34 percent of total Bac Giang's litchi output.

In Bac Giang's Luc Ngan district, the main litchi bowl of the province, as many as 156 Chinese traders are working with Vietnamese partners to buy large quantity of litchi at high and stable prices to sell in China, said the department.

In 2016, Bac Giang will produce some 130,000 tons of litchi while that of Hai Duong will be 50,000 tons. Main crop of litchi will last from June 20 till July 25.

Over the past few years, China remained the largest market for the fruit while consuming as many as 90 percent of Vietnamese exported litchi.
