Brazil's Supreme Court takes new case against House speaker for corruption

Source: Xinhua   2016-06-23 15:14:54

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jun. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court on Wednesday decided to accept a new corruption case against House Speaker Eduardo Cunha, who is now already a defendant in two similar cases.

Cunha, now suspended from his House position, has been accused of corruption, money laundering and tax evasion in two different cases. A fourth case against him has also been presented by General Prosecutor Rodrigo Janot and is to be submitted to the Court for acceptance.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday unanimously decided that several uncovered Swiss accounts are in fact used by Cunha and his family.

According to the Prosecution, the millions of dollars in the accounts originated from large bribes Cunha reportedly took for favoring companies in public contracts.

Cunha denies all accusations. He was recently suspended from the House because the Court thought he was using his influence to coerce representatives on a case against him at the House Ethics Committee.

Earlier this month, the Ethics Committee approved a report which recommended Cunha's expulsion from Congress. The report will now be voted on by the House.
