LAGOS, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's secret police has arrested the former chief of army staff, Major-General Azubuike Ihejirika (rtd), a security source said Wednesday.

Ihejirika was picked on Tuesday night from his residence in Abuja by the Department of State Security (DSS) operatives.

An Australian negotiator, Stephen Davis had in 2015, alleged that the former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu-Sheriff and Ihejirika were the sponsors of the Boko Haram insurgents.

But the former army chief had described Davis' allegations against him as frivolous and unfounded.

He had said the claim by the Australian was meant to divert the attention of the country and its security agencies. Enditem
