HO CHI MINH CITY, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission on Wednesday launched a new cooperation project worth 1.6 million euro with Vietnam to enhance the capacity and effectiveness of the Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety (VARANS).

The European Commission will assist Vietnam to establish a sound legal and regulatory framework before it embarks on a nuclear power program, the European Union (EU) delegation to the country said Wednesday.

Moreover, the technical capabilities of VARANS' staff will be enhanced, helping them cope with the anticipated introduction and use of nuclear energy in Vietnam.

The EU has been supporting Vietnam since 2012 under its Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation and provides cooperation, assistance and continued training and tutoring to the regulatory body's staff.

Vietnam is making preparations for building its first nuclear power plant with capacity of 4,000 MW in the central province of Ninh Thuan, which is scheduled to become operational by 2028.
