BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Beijing has a worsening drug problem and people using drugs in Beijing are becoming younger, Beijing police said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The number of registered drug users in the capital has grown at an average annual rate of 12.3 percent over the past five years to 33,000.

Those under the age of 35 accounted for 62 percent of the total. The youngest was only 12 years old, according to the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau.

Over the past decade, Beijing police have closed more than 5,700 drug cases but crimes are spreading to campuses, public institutions and companies in recent years, said Sun Li, vice president of Beijing Higher People's Court.
