LONDON, June 16 (Xinhua) -- The campaigns of Vote Leave and Remain for the referendum on Britain's membership of the EU have been suspended, following the death of a British politician after she was shot in an attack in West Yorkshire on Thursday.
Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, said the country would be "in shock at the horrific murder", while British Prime Minister David Cameron also expressed his condolences.
Local media reported that Vote Leave and Remain have both suspended campaigning for the EU referendum after the attack.
West Yorkshire Police said they were notified at noon of an incident on Market Street, Birstall, where a woman in her 40s suffered serious injuries and was in critical condition.
The victim's identity was confirmed as Jo Cox, 41, the Labour MP for Batley and Spen.
"Jo was attacked by a man, who inflicted serious and sadly, ultimately fatal injuries. Subsequently there was a further attack on a 77-year-old man, nearby who has sustained injuries that are non life-threatening," said Dee Collins, temporary chief constable of West Yorkshire Police.
He said Cox was pronounced deceased because of her serious injuries at 1:48 p.m. by a doctor.
He added that a man was arrested nearby by police officers, and weapons have also been recovered.
