KATHMANDU, June 16 (Xinhua) -- The Nepalese government on Thursday endorsed a detailed action plan to implement the new Constitution promulgated in the country in September last year, officials said.
A meeting of the Council of Ministers Presided by Prime Minister K.P Sharma Oli approved the government's action plan that includes timelines to hold elections at the different levels ranging from Central, Provincial to the local level.
As per the action plan, in the initial phase the government will hold local bodies' election in December 2016, while elections in seven provinces will be held in May 2017.
Minister for Information and Communications Sherdhan Rai, who is also the spokesperson of the government, told media that the constitution implementation action plan will be forwarded to the Parliament for its approval.
Similarly, the government has planned to hold elections for the Upper House and Lower House within December 2017.
The Nepalese government also decided to bring laws relating to the election of the president and vice president within January 2017.
Meanwhile, the government has also planned to bring legislation on the election to the federal parliament, provincial assembly and members of the House of Representatives and National Assembly within 2017.
"The government is now sincerely working toward effective implementation of the new Constitution. Elections from the central, provincial and local level levels will be held in the stipulated times as per the action plan endorsed by today's meeting," Law Minister Agni Kharel told media.
The Nepalese government has also given top priority to hold talks with the fringe Madhes-based parties who have been launching agitation for months seeking fresh amendments in the Constitution, officials said.
The fringe Madhes-based parties claim that Constitutional provisions are discriminatory against people living in the Madhes region which borders India.
Nepal promulgated the first Republican Constitution on September 20 last year, ending nine years of prolonged political transition following the overthrow of Monarchy in 2008. Enditem
