MELBOURNE, June 16 (Xinhua) -- A mansion in the Melbourne suburb of Toorak has smashed the city's house price record, after it reportedly sold for more than 17.75 million U.S. dollars this week.

No 4 Robertson Street, Toorak is understood to have broken the Melbourne metropolitan house price record, which was previously set in 2010 in the same suburb.

Toorak, in Melbourne's inner-east, has long been considered a suburb for the city's more affluent residents, with a median house price of just less than 2.4 million U.S. dollars in 2016.

The mansion belonged to the well-known Smorgon family, which came into money thanks to late billionaire patriarch Victor, an entrepreneur and philanthropist.

According to local media on Thursday, the house was on the market for just 19 days before a sale was finalized, with particular interest coming from overseas buyers -- particularly those in the United States as well as Asia.

The identity of the buyer remains confidential, while real estate agent Marcus Chiminello refused to comment on the exact sale price of the Robertson Street mansion.

The property contains seven bedrooms -- six in the house and one in the self-contained staff apartment, a 25-meter lap pool and spa, as well as generous living and study areas.

Rumors surfaced that the house smashed the Victorian house record of 19.23 million U.S. dollars, set by a mansion and property on the affluent coastal town of Portsea, however a slightly lower offer with better settlement terms was said to be accepted by the Smorgon family.
