STOCKHOLM, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Swedish police are to install surveillance cameras at a youth music festival in Stockholm following reports about widespread sexual harassment at last year's event.
The festival, called We Are Stockholm, will be held in the Swedish capital's city center in August and is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of young people.
This year, the Stockholm police have decided to use surveillance cameras in order to "prevent and detect crimes and in order to aid criminal investigations," Christer Birgersson, who heads police operations at the festival, told Swedish Television.
There will also be signs around the festival area at the Kungstradgarden park in central Stockholm informing attendants about the security cameras, which will be manned so that any potential incidents can be discovered as they happen. The recordings may also be used as evidence.
In addition, there will be mobile police offices at We Are Stockholm as well as at the Stockholm Culture Festival, which is also held in August.
Media reports about the sexual harassment of young girls at We Are Stockholm last year stirred up heated debate in Sweden earlier this year and several of those suspected of sexually assaulting young girls were reported to be from foreign backgrounds.
