HARBIN, June 14 (Xinhua) -- A bomb abandoned by the invading Japanese army more than 70 years ago has been unearthed in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, said local police on Tuesday.

The bomb was found by a man working in an excavator at 9 a.m. in Heihe City, just across a river from Russia. It was 115 centimeters long and weighed over 150 kilograms. Police officer Guo Zhenhuan said that its killing radius was more than 150 meters.

Guo told Xinhua that more than 300 bombs and grenades have been found since last year, most of which were between 2.5 kilograms and 40 kilograms. "It is the first time we have found such a big bomb in recent years," he said.

The bomb has been moved to a safe place.

During the period of puppet Manchuria State from 1932 to 1945, Japanese soldiers built more than 1,250 underground defense works and warehouses along the China-Soviet border. In Heihe there were two ordnance factories, 500 ammunition depots, 60 barracks and 13 airports.
