BERLIN, June 13 (Xinhua) -- A German man shot at a refugee shelter near his home with an air rifle, wounding two refugees, one of them a five-year-old girl, local police said on Monday.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon in the town of Lingen in western Germany, local police said in a statement.

The 21-year-old man shot from a window of his third-floor apartment which is about 40 meters away from the refugee shelter, slightly wounding a girl from Macedonia and a Syrian man, 18, in their legs.

Police searched the shooter's home and confiscated an air rifle and ammunition after receiving a witness report.

Police said an investigation was ongoing, and it was not clear whether the shooting was "politically motivated."

The two injured received out-patient treatment at a hospital, according to the police.
