UNITED NATIONS, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Monday adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) until Dec. 15.

The UNSMIL will continue to undertake such tasks as human rights monitoring and reporting, support for securing uncontrolled arms and related material and countering its proliferation, support to key Libyan institutions and coordinate international assistance, the resolution said.

The 15-nation UN council reaffirmed its "strong commitment" to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Libya, the resolution said.

The resolution reiterated its "support for the full implementation" of the Libyan Political Agreement signed in Skhirat, Morocco, on Dec. 17, 2015 to form a government of national accord in the North African country.

The UNSMIL is a special political mission established in September 2011 by the Security Council at the request of the Libyan authorities following six months of armed conflict to support the country's new transitional authorities in their post-conflict efforts.
