MOMBASA, Kenya, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan authorities on Monday announced elaborate measures following terrorist alert over possible attacks by Al-Shabaab during holy month of Ramadan in the coastal city of Mombasa.
Mombasa County Commissioner Maalim Mohamed said the intelligence has been shared among security apparatus to avert any attacks by the militant group that is planning to cause mass causalities in the coastal city.
Mohammed said they have activated police operations mainly at vital installations that might be easy target by Al-Shabaab fighters.
"We have an alert and we want to assure residents and visitors of adequate security; we have increased surveillance at key installations including airports and shopping malls, Likoni channel, and hotels," Mohammed told journalists.
He said they have developed security measures checklist to assist in gathering and sharing of intelligence information among stakeholders due to the threats posed by the terrorist groups.
Mohammed disclosed that the government will be having meeting with private firms in the county to sensitize them on safety precautions to ensure live and properties are protected.
On May 30, the police circulated the photos and names of eight wanted criminals terrorizing the public within the coastal region.
The police said the wanted are suspected Al-Shabaab returnees, and were involved in the killing of three community leaders in Diani, Kwale of the coastal region.
The police requested the public to report to the nearest police station should they see or have any information regarding the individuals.
