Jamaica seizes 605 pounds of marijuana bound for Suriname

KINGSTON, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Jamaican Customs Agency has seized 605 pounds (about 274.4 kilograms) of marijuana in a container waiting for transshipment to Suriname at the Kingston Container Terminal.

The agency said the "inconsistencies" regarding the shipment alerted the officers and further examination led to the discovery of five packages containing 109 parcels of marijuana earlier this week.

The marijuana reportedly has an approximate street value of 31,000 U.S. dollars.

Jamaica was listed as the largest producer and exporter of cannabis herb in Central America and the Caribbean by the International Narcotics Control Board.

In its 2014 annual report, the United Nations-charted monitoring body said as countermeasures against drug-related crimes took effect in Latin America, Jamaica emerged as the new hub for drug trafficking.
