SHANGHAI, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The United States and Australia kept winning streak while hosts China edged Russia 9-8 on the third day of 2016 FINA Women's Water Polo World League Super Final here on Thursday.

China clinched their first goal after 30 seconds and started high in the first half, leading 2-1, 4-2 but faded a little bit in the second half 1-2, 2-3 while the Russians made a strong comeback in the last quarter when Nedezhda Glyzina scored two straight goals and Maria Borisova added one goal to seal the score at 8.

"I am very proud of my girls the way they did in the last quarter, hitting the big shots. However, we made some mistakes in defense, but the defense in the last quarter was really amazing. They were moving and pushing because we were tired. I am also happy that they came back from yesterday's loss. I think we still need to work on the third quarter as we rushed something," said Ricardo Azevedo, head coach of China.

"It is the second game we won by just one goal. The competition is always breathtaking just like this. So we have to be ready to have hard battle and strong rivals," Azevedo said.

In the other group matches, United States nailed down the offensive Spain 12-10 (4-3, 4-3, 2-2, 2-2), Australia trounced Italy 13-7 (3-1, 3-2, 3-2, 4-2), Canada romped Brazil 16-4 (3-1, 3-0, 5-1, 5-2).

After three straight group victories, USA and Australia lead their respective groups. China had two wins, one loss and placed second in Group A.
