SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, June 9 (Xinhua) -- At least four Indian army troopers were killed and nine others injured after a vehicle they were travelling in overturned on the road in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Thursday.
The accident took place in frontier Samba district, about 53 km south of Jammu city, the winter capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"Four army personnel were killed while nine others injured in a road accident at the Jammu-Pathankote highway in Samba distrct last evening," a police official said. "The vehicle carrying army men overturned after driver lost control over steering at Jatwal area."
Though all the personnel were rushed to military hospital immediately, however doctors declared four of them brought dead.
"The condition of some of the injured is critical," the official said.
Deadly road accidents are common in this mountainous region often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
Indian-controlled Kashmir is considered as the highest militarized region. Officially India does not reveal the actual number of its troops deployed in the troubled region. However, rights activists say there are over 700,000 Indian troops and paramilitary troops in the region fighting an anti-India insurgency.
A guerrilla war is also going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the restive region since 1989.
