NAIROBI, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Kenya said Tuesday it will domesticate the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in order to accelerate national development.
Ministry of Devolution and Planning Permanent Secretary, Saitoti Torome, told Xinhua that the key reason for domestication is that the situation in Kenya is different from other countries.
"We want to domesticate the SDGs because we need to interpret the goals according to the local conditions present in Kenya," Torome said on the sidelines of the World Bank Group Open Day event in Nairobi.
The SDGs were signed by UN member states on September 2015, and aim to build on the Millennium Development Goals. The SDGs consist of 17 goals, 169 targets and 300 indicators to be achieved by the year 2030.
The Ministry of Devolution and Planning will examine each of the goals and compared it with Kenya's current situation.
"If it is the issue of gender, we will see how they are being addressed in our country and what progress has been achieved so far," Torome said.
"The way other nations handle environment is different from how Kenya will handle environment because we are more vulnerable to climate change," he added.
The official said his ministry will soon launch the SDGs and present a report on how to implement them.
Torome said that Kenya plans to mainstream the 17 goals into the country's five-year Medium Term Plans.
The East African nation is currently implementing the second Medium Term Plans, which runs from 2013 to 2017.
