WARSAW, June 6 (Xinhua) -- An inauguration of Anakonda 2016, a major military exercise aimed at verifying NATO forces' ability to protect its eastern flank, was held here on Monday.

The U.S. Army Chief of Staff, General Mark Milley said European countries and the United States shared common values which should be protected for further generations.

He also reminded that the U.S. government had decided to increase the country's military presence in Europe, putting more heavy equipment in the region, improving military infrastructure, and organizing more exercises together with their allies.

Therefore, "no one should have any doubts concerning the U.S. engagement in Europe's peace and security," said Ben Hodges, the U.S. Army Europe commander.

It is the sixth edition of the biggest military exercise in Poland since 1989. Around 31,000 NATO soldiers are to participate, representing 18 NATO countries, including 12,000 Polish forces, as well as partner countries' forces. They will be equipped with 3,000 vehicles, 105 aircraft and 12 ships.

The Anakonda military exercise has been held every two years since 2006. This year's edition marks an exercise focused on creating security in a transparent manner. The exercise also aims to check the multidimensional efficiency, including non-military elements, as well as cooperation with the territorial defense subdivisions.

The exercises are to last until June 17.
