KABUL, June 5 (Xinhua) -- An Afghan lawmaker was killed and 11 other people were wounded in a bomb attack in Kabul on Sunday, an Interior Ministry spokesman said.
"A member of the Lower House of Afghanistan's parliament, Shir Wali Wardak, martyred as a result of an explosion in Kabul this evening," spokesman Sediq Sediqqi tweeted.
The blast occurred near Wardak's house in Qambar Square, west of Kabul.
An investigation was launched and more information will be released later, Sediqqi said.
Among the injured were security force members and body guards of Wardak, unofficial sources said.
The killed parliamentarian was the brother of Farooq Wardak, a former minister of education and well-known politician.
Taliban militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since early April when the militant group launched its annual rebel offensive in different areas of the country.
About 600 civilians were killed and more than 1,340 others wounded in conflict-related violence and Taliban-led attacks in the first quarter of the year, according to UN mission in the country.
