6.3-magnitude quake hits off E. Indonesia's Maluku, no casualties or damage reported

JAKARTA, June 6 (Xinhua) -- A 6.3-magnitude earthquake rocked the Maluku Islands in eastern Indonesia on early Monday morning, the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency reported, but no casualties or damage have been reported so far.

The quake struck at 01:25 local time (16:25 GMT Sunday). The epicenter was 146 km southwest of South Buru Regency, Maluku Province, 299 km from Maluku Province's capital Ambon with a depth of 445 km under the sea.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) put the magnitude at 6.3 with a depth of 428 km.

The Indonesian agency said there was no potential for tsunami.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire" where several tectonic plates meet, making it vulnerable to frequent earthquakes.
