BUCHAREST, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of a nightclub fire on late Friday in Romania's downtown Bucharest remained unchanged at 27, yet the number could increase given the serious condition of many wounded, a Romanian Interior Ministry official said on Saturday.

Up to now, 26 people have died before reaching hospital and one died in hospital, with 17 of them still unidentified, said Raed Arafat, Romania's Secretary of State of the Interior Ministry.

A total of 184 injured were hospitalized, while 146 remained in hospital for further treatment for moderate or severe burn injuries, he said, adding many were in a critical condition.

Altogether 10 injured at the Hospital for Plastic Surgery were in a serious condition, with prognosis predicted, according to the hospital.

The fire was started when sponges on a pillar were lit by a spark as pyrotechnic effects were used during a concert at the nightclub called Colectiv, witnesses said.

The concert was marking an album launch by a pop band Goodbye to Gravity with a light and pyrotechnical show, as organizers announced on the club's Facebook.

Authorities still could not confirm the total number of people at the scene of incident, yet the estimated number has already doubled the originally claimed figure of 200 people.
