BUCHAREST, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- A fire at a nightclub in downtown Bucharest late Friday followed by explosions has left at least 26 dead and over 100 wounded, authorities said early Saturday.

The fire was started by a spark when pyrotechnic effects were used during a concert at the nightclub called Colectiv, lighting sponges on a pillar, witnesses said.

"The evacuation of the club was over," said Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea said.

About 200 young people were at the scene when the fire broke out. As many as 145 injured people were admitted to different hospitals here, according to the latest release of Secretary of State of the Interior Ministry Raed Arafat who heads the Department for Emergency Situations.

The club's Facebook page says the concert marked the launch of an album by pop band Goodbye to Gravity.

The organizers had announced they would stage a custom light show as well as a pyrotechnical display at the event.

So far, there have been no reports of foreign casualties.
