No agreement on future of Syrian President al-Assad yet: Russian FM

English.news.cn   2015-10-31 04:29:25

VIENNA, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- There is still no agreement over the future of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters here on Friday.

Lavrov said differences remained over the future of al-Assad after talks that brought together global stake holders to try and initiate a political process to find a solution to the crisis in Syria.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry echoed Lavrov, acknowledging the fate of al-Assad was still a point of contention among nations participating in the Vienna talks.

In response to this issue, Russia said the people of Syria should decided their future themselves. Lavrov said Russia wants to stop the crisis in Syria and would continue fighting against terrorists in the country.

Russia has been carrying out air strikes against Islamic extremists in Syria for weeks.

Many stake holders, especially the United States and other gulf nations, believe al-Assad must leave office to usher in peace in Syria.
