China attends Vienna meeting on Syria with proposal

VIENNA, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China brought a proposal to the negotiating table in Vienna, seeking a solution to end the Syrian crisis, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Li Baodong said here Friday.

"China, together with the international community, has been seeking a political solution to end the Syria crisis ... We bring a Chinese proposal to this meeting," Li Baodong told reporters before the multilateral meeting.

Li attended an expanded meeting on Friday in Vienna, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a press briefing in Beijing. Lu said China supports a positive outcome from the Vienna talks.

A multilateral meeting on the Syrian crisis was held on Friday in Vienna, Austria, and some major countries in the world and regional players, including China, Russia, the United States, Iran and Saudi Arabia took part in the gathering.

On Thursday, top diplomats from the United States, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey also held in Vienna to discuss the Syrian crisis.

Russia started its airstrikes against positions of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) in Syria on Sept. 30, claiming that the "preemptive" act was taken to protect its national interests.

Russian Defense Ministry on Wednesday reported that Russian air forces stationed in Syria made 71 sorties in the last 24 hours, hitting 118 terrorist targets.
