TAIPEI, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Taiwan health department on Tuesday threatened to place couple under investigation for suspected child abuse if they refuse to vaccinate their children.
More than 120,000 children under six in Taiwan have not been vaccinated, the health department said in a press release.
The island's health standards state that from birth until 15, children must receive around 20 injections to protect them against ten types of diseases like tuberculosis, hepatitis B, polio and measles.
Although more than 90 percent of children on the island have been vaccinated, thousands slip through the net every year, the statement lamented.
Since vaccinations are not compulsory and parents will not be punished or fined, the health department feels as if their hands are tied.
Thus, the department decided to issue the ultimatum; ensure children are vaccinated, or give a solid explanation, or face investigation, the statement said.
The childcare authority have the final say in whether an investigation should be launched.
