BERLIN, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- The following are major news items in leading German newspapers on Friday.

Die Welt:

-- Because of the heavy influx of refugees, the German police reached their limits, as daily operational tasks are left undone. According to the German Police Union (DPolG), the number of traffic fatalities increases, because the police ignored the traffic monitoring due to the refugee crisis.

Sueddeutsche Zeitung:

-- At Volkswagen, possibly more diesel cars are affected by manipulated exhaust valves than previously known. The Group is currently checking whether also diesel engine EA 288 ran with an illegal software. If the results are positive, further millions of vehicles could be recalled.
