WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The number of Americans initially applying for unemployment aid rose last week, though it is still at its historical low level, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

In the week ending Oct. 17, the advance figure of seasonally adjusted initial claims for jobless benefits increased to 259,000, up 3,000 from the unrevised level of the previous week, said the Department Thursday.

Meanwhile, the four-week moving average, which helps smooth out week-to-week volatility, edged down by 2,000 to 263,250 last week, the lowest level since Dec. 15, 1973.

The advance figure of seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 10 increased 6,000 from the previous week to 2.17 million. Enditem
