Smog forecast for north China

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Environmental Protection said Tuesday that large parts of north China would likely experience heavy smog from Friday.

Beijing, and its neighbors, Tianjin and Hebei, will see smog until Sunday, said Luo Yi, head of the ministry's environment monitoring department.

Residents of the provinces of Shanxi, Shandong and Henan will also see smog from Friday, with PM 2.5, the airborne particles that measure less than 2.5 microns in diameter, being the major pollutant, Luo added.

Local environmental departments have received orders to closely monitor air quality and prepare the necessary response measures.

Children, the elderly and people with respiratory diseases have been advised to stay indoors.

According to the National Meteorological Center, smog was reported across large parts of north China on Tuesday.
