CANBERRA, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has participated in a video supporting Hillary Clinton's U.S. presidential campaign after the Clinton camp approached Gillard asking for her backing.
In the video, released late on Monday night, Gillard spoke about the commitment Clinton has made to girls' education through the years.
"Hillary Clinton understood in her heart how important it was for girls to get an opportunity, but she also understood in her head that if we want to build peaceful, economically prosperous nations, then we have to educate girls," Gillard said in the video.
"She was determined to see that women take their place as economic partners in their community, and take their place as political leaders in their community."
The Guardian Australia reported that the Clinton camp had reached out to Gillard to be a part of the video which was filmed in New York earlier this month.
Other political luminaries to appear in the clip included former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta.
Clinton's time as U.S. Secretary of State coincided with Gillard's prime ministership, leading to the two forming a strong working relationship.
Since leaving the parliament, Gillard has joined the Global Partnership for Education, where she is increasing awareness and funding for childhood education.
Gillard has often spoken about raising literacy and numeracy rates for girls, telling University of Adelaide students last month that it is "morally just and right to educate girls."
Clinton is favorite in the polls to win the Democratic Party's nomination after strong performances in recent candidate debates.
