LISBON, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Portugal's Social Democrat Party (PSD) leader Pedro Passos Coelho met with President Anibal Cavaco Silva on Monay at the Belem Palace on forming a new government after the Oct. 4 general election.
"I came to inform the President of the Republic of the steps I have taken with a view to creating conditions for stability and the country's governability, given that I lead the party with the most votes in the recent elections," Passos Coelho said after the meeting.
"It is now, after hearing the parties, under the Constitution, up to the president of the republic to proceed to the nomination of future prime minister after hearing the parties according to his assessment and judgment," he said.
Passos Coelho has failed to reach consensus with PS leader Antonio Costa in two meetings after the election on forming a government.
Cavaco Silva will hold talks with delegations of PSD-CDS-PP, PS, Left Bloc on Tuesday and the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), the Green Party and the People-Animal and Nature Party on Wednesday.
The coalition of PSD-CDS-PP won most votes in the Oct. 4 election and gained 107 seats in the 230-seat parliament but lost the majority while the PS got 86 seats.
