Agreement reached on entry of humanitarian aid to several Syrian hotspots

DAMASCUS, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian authorities and the rebel groups agreed on the entry of food and medical aid convoys to some besieged areas in northern and southern Syria, a source told Xinhua on Sunday.

Ten truckloads of food stuffs will be delivered to the pro-government towns of Kafraya and Foa in the countryside of the northwestern province of Idlib, the source said, adding that another 25 truckloads will be sent to the rebel-held towns of Madaya, Serghya, Buqain, and Zabadani in the countryside of the capital Damascus.

The agreement on this humanitarian gesture came less than a month since the government and the militant groups observed a ceasefire in the aforementioned areas, where the rebels have been besieging and shelling the Shiite towns of Kafraya and Foa, and the government troops were on a crushing offensive against Zabadani and other areas in the western countryside of Damascus.

The source said the aid convoys will be delivered in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.

The agreement came as the Syrian army has recently unleashed wide-scale offensive on several frontlines across the country.
