ATHENS, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Greek Coast Guard announced on Sunday that five more refugees, among them three children and a toddler, lost their lives in two new boat incidents in the Aegean Sea as Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos was urging actions to end conflicts in the Middle East which drive away millions of civilians.
An eight year old child lost its life after falling in the sea from the boat that was carrying him, his parents and other 107 refugees from Turkey to the Greek island of Farmakonissi, Greek authorities said.
Two women, a child and a toddler drowned in another incident off the coasts of Kastelorizo, according to the Greek Coast Guard. Eleven persons were rescued by a U.S.-flagged yacht that was sailing in the region, while the Turkish Coast Guard was also alerted for a man that went missing, the Greek officials said.
The new tragedies were reported as Pavlopoulos reiterated a call for the ending of conflicts in the Middle East and the assistance of refugees during a meeting with representatives of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy ahead of a forum on cross-religion cooperation and peace in the Middle East due to be held in Athens on Monday.
