COLOMBO, October 18 (Xinhua) -- A former leader of the women's unit of Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger died of cancer on Sunday, officials said.
Thamilini, leader of the women's wing of Tamil Tiger, also known as the LTTE, died of cancer while receiving treatment at a local cancer hospital.
Thamilini joined the LTTE in 1991, after listening to a lecture by the LTTE, and received battle training in a camp in northern Sri Lanka.
After the previous head of the LTTE women's wing was killed in a clash with the Sri Lanka army in the north, Thamilini took her place.
The LTTE was defeated after 30 years of bitter fighting in May 2009 and several LTTE cadres were arrested and detained.
Thamilini was arrested following the end of the war at a camp for the war displaced and was sent for rehabilitation.
In 2013, Thamilini was handed back to her relatives after completing rehabilitation.
Thamilini is one of the most senior former LTTE members to have been released into society after undergoing rehabilitation.
