KABUL, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Up to 42 Taliban militants have been killed in separate military operations across Afghanistan within the last 24 hours, the country's Defense Ministry said Sunday morning.

"A total of 42 terrorists had been killed, 31 wounded and two others were detained as Afghan army, police and intelligence agency personnel launched several joint military operations in different provinces over the past 24 hours," the ministry said in a statement.

The security forces seized weapons and defused several rounds of roadside bombs and landmines, the statement added.

About five army personnel also lost their lives in different attacks over the same period, the statement confirmed.

The Taliban-led violence continues in Afghanistan. Afghan security forces have pressed on clearing the militants in restive provinces as they assumed the full security charges from NATO-led troops since Jan. 1 this year.

The Taliban militant group has yet to make comments.
