MANILA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Two soldiers were killed when they were attacked by members of New People's Army (NPA)'s in south Philippine province of Compostela Valley on Saturday, military said on Sunday.
The Philippine military said the soldiers from the 25th Infantry Battalion encountered around 60 NPA members at Casoon Village, Monkayo, Compostela Valley Province at round 2 p.m..
After 25 minutes' firefight, two soldiers were killed in action with another wounded while militants managed to escape.
The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign against the government in the countryside for four decades. Military estimates the NPA strength at more than 4,000 men scattered in more than 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country.
