17th China Shanghai Int'l Arts Festival opens

SHANGHAI, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- The 17th China Shanghai International Arts Festival opened on Friday evening.

Chinese theater director Tian Qinxin and Vadim Repin, Belgian-Russian violinist, were given special contribution awards at the opening ceremony.Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, French dancer and director Jean-Christophe Maillot, Swiss choreographist Gil Roman also received this award.

Started in 1999, the China Shanghai International Arts Festival is hosted by Ministry of Culture. The festival this year is due to last until November 16. With 46 plays, 10 exhibitions and hundreds of performances, it is expected to attract an audience of over 4 million this year.
