ICRC calls for restraint from all sides in Israel, Occupied Palestinian Territory

English.news.cn   2015-10-16 02:26:18

GENEVA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Thursday called for restraint from all sides in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory as fears grow of the security situation worsening.

According to the ICRC, attacks against civilians and the growing number of casualties at demonstrations and other events are fueling a climate of fear and retribution.

ICRC's head of delegation in Israel and the Occupied Territory Jacques de Maio highlighted deliberate or indiscriminate attacks against civilians, wherever they take place and whoever the perpetrator, are unacceptable and should never be justified or incited, under any circumstances, adding attacks against civilians must stop.

"Any use of force in response to the situation must be proportionate," Maio stressed. "In particular, firearms and live ammunition must only be used as a last resort, to protect against an imminent threat to life."

ICRC called on all sides to show restraint and responsibility and warned failure to do so can only further aggravate the situation.
