MANILA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Philippine Senator Grace Poe filed on Thursday her certificate of candidacy for president in the May 2016 elections.

Her running mate Senator Francis Escudero also filed his candidacy for vice president at the Commission on Elections.

Their submission came six hours after the administration-backed presidential bet Manuel Roxas II and vice presidential candidate Leni Robredo also formalized their candidacies.

While they were not the candidates whom President Benigno Aquino III endorsed, Poe and Escudero vowed to continue what the current government has started and to accomplish those that the Aquino administration failed to do.

Poe's qualification as a senator is now being questioned before the Senate Electoral Tribunal because she was allegedly not a natural-born Filipino, one of the requirements of a senator and of a president.

But Poe insisted that while she is a foundling, she is a natural-born Filipino.
