HOUSTON, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed on Wednesday afternoon after a small plane crashed in the U.S. state of Louisiana, local media reported.
The plane, a twin-engine Cessna 421, experienced trouble shortly after departing the Hammond Northshore Regional Airport, about 75 km east of the state's capital of Baton Rouge.
The pilot tried to return, but the aircraft crashed into a field near a runway, according to the Times-Picayune, an English daily newspaper published in the state's largest city of New Orleans.
The victims were killed on impact, and their identity was not released, Hammond Fire Chief John Thomas said, adding that 12 fire fighters from a station on the airport property responded to the crash and put out the blaze.
Lynn Lunsford, a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman, confirmed the accident, saying that FAA investigators, along with those from the National Transportation Safety Board, were en route to the city of Hammond to investigate the cause of the accident.
