NEW YORK, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai said Wednesday that Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the U.S. was a great success, and he called on the two countries to build stronger and more resilient relations.
Cui made the remarks when addressing the gala dinner of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, a leading organization in the United States to promote U.S.-China relations.
The ambassador said that Xi has just had a very successful state visit to the United States, which broadened Chinese and U.S. cooperation in many fields and enhanced the friendship and understanding between the two peoples.
The most important message from the visit is that china and the United States should be partners in cooperation, not rivals in confrontation. Cooperation rather than anything else is the defining feature of the China -U.S. relations, he said.
In his speech, he emphasized that the world is calling for a new model of international relationships in general, and a new model of relationships between China and the U.S. in particular, which is not about dominance but about partnership, and which is not about "zero sum rivalry" but about "win-win cooperation."
"This is no longer a world where one country can single handle it, make all the international rules, rather this is a world where all countries have to work together to develop international rules, and maintain and improve international order," Cui said.
He pointed out that China and the United States should continue to focus on cooperation and also continue to handle differences in a constructive and pragmatic way, finding creative ways to turn differences into opportunities for further cooperation.
"It's especially important that we should never allow any possible differences to escalate into clashes and confrontations," he stressed.
Over 500 guests took part in the gathering. Through their respective representatives, Xi and U.S. President Barack Obama sent their greetings to all those attending the Gala Dinner and their best wishes for the China-U.S. relations.
