VANCOUVER, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- One man was confirmed dead and 10 others hurt after a man attacked a band office with a hammer in west Canada on Wednesday.
Among the injured, two were in critical condition, another two in serious condition and six others with non-life threatening injuries after the man attacked the Bridge Indian Band office in Lillooet in central British Columbia, local report said.
The police were called just before 8:30 a.m. to a report that a man with a weapon was in the office, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a news release.
But before the police arrived at the office, the suspect had already been subdued and restrained.
"RCMP members arrested the male but were unable to transport him as he became unconscious and unresponsive," the release said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene later on, it added.
An emergency worker said the man apparently attacked one person with the hammer, and when others in the office went to help they were also beaten.
The Independent Investigations Office has been called to Lillooet because the man died while in police custody, local report said.
