BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The ongoing refugee crisis will be a major topic at Thursday's European Union summit, where EU leaders are expected to debate over quotas of refugees acceptable to each member state. However, also important is to deal with the root cause of the crisis.
Hundreds of thousands of refugees pouring into Europe have made it difficult for the European countries to accommodate them, who potentially pose a threat to social stability there. European countries are yet to sew the seams among them as to how to handle the sudden massive invasion.
Czech President Milos Zeman has blatantly blamed the United States and its Western allies' intervention in the Middle East and North Africa as the root cause of the current refugee crisis in Europe.
"The current wave of immigration is rooted in the crazy (U.S.) idea to launch an intervention in Iraq, which allegedly had weapons of mass destruction, but nothing was found," Zeman was quoted as saying by Russia Today.
As Zoltan Galik, a European integration and security policy expert, has pointed out, the failure to stabilize and truly democratize the Middle East after bringing down governments in Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan is a major cause of today's refugees crisis.
The Hungarian expert said Western powers' military intervention in the Middle East and North Africa has destabilized Afghanistan and Iraq and, indirectly, caused the Syrian civil war.
However, the United States, which has shown no sincerity in accepting refugees, wants to further enforce its military involvement in the Syrian conflict.
This is evident in the remarks of Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "If Europe decides to address the current crisis at its source, the problem would not only be a border control and humanitarian issue, but a military one that must be discussed by NATO defense leaders," said the top U.S. soldier.
At the upcoming EU Summit, member states will continue fighting over refugee quotas with no consensus on the root cause of the crisis.
As long as Western countries continue to intervene in others' internal affairs, refugee crises will not stop disturbing the world.
As U.S. magazine The National Interest noted in an article, trying to dominate the globe and push democracy on other countries does not work.
Indeed, evolution and revolution must suit national conditions and people have the right to choose their development paths.
