China Voice: An irresistable force in global governance

English.news.cn   2015-10-14 21:51:17

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The face of world peace is still pockmarked with regional wars, severe poverty and economic stagnation.

On Tuesday, China's leadership, the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, discussed global governance, well aware of the urgency of bringing change a broken system, and eager to be at the forefront of reform.

During the discussion, President Xi talked about "laying down rules for international order and international mechanisms" and deciding in which direction the world will head.

The world has changed a lot since World War II, most notably the rise of countries of little global significance 70 years ago. Home to over 70 percent of the world's people, developing countries have much less say in global governance than they deserve and this must change.

Globalization has made us interdependent to a degree few imagines when the lines of a new world order were drawn, no country can now prosper without working amicably with others. The way that disputes are settled and profits are divided has to change accordingly, but the pressing need for change is no reason to throw away the good work of the previous century.

The United Nations have been essential to settling regional disputes and ensuring a generally stable world. Often, when countries bypass the UN and violate the principles of the UN Charter, injustice occurs.

China, as one of the founders of post-WWII order, has benefited from peace and stability and actively participates in many multilateral mechanisms. Like other emerging economies, China would like international organizations, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, to be more representative of developing countries and provide more opportunities for them to express their needs. Global government must reflect the will and interests of the majority of countries and people in a more balanced manner.

China is ready to play a larger part in new economic and trade areas.Proposing new coalitions, such as the Belt and Road, and new concepts of international relations, China advocates strengthening and complementing current global governance.

A call for a more reasonable and just international order is hardly a rebellion or threat.

In face of irresistible change to the international landscape, those who refuse to evolve will only stand in the way and slow down the inevitable improvement of global governance, deny themselves the chance to benefit.
